The first level of Gliding Scholarship is the Blue Standard. This involves several hours of flying in a Motor Glider or approximately 10-15 launches in a Conventional glider. Airborne skills include the use of primary and secondary aircraft controls, co-ordinated flight, flight instruments, turns and stalls. Ground-school includes basic aerodynamics, aircraft stability and forces in flight. Upon completion of the Blue Standard cadets will be evaluated for suitability to complete Silver Standard.

Silver Standard expands on the skills and knowledge of the Blue Standard. Silver students will gain a full set of flying skills including launch (or takeoff), landing and emergency manouvers. Ground training focuses on airfield operations, causes of emergencies and airmanship. Students focus primarilly on the standard traffic pattern and those who reach the necessary standard will complete a SOLO flight!

The very best students who have taken part in Blue and Silver training may get the opportunity to return to the gliding unit to complete their Gold training. During this course students will be expected to operate as a temporary member of the unit helping to organize and run operations. Training includes advanced gliding, cross country and additional emergencies and culminates in 5 or more successful solo flights. Under certain conditions, outstanding pilots may be invited to stay at a gliding unit as a "Staff Cadet" to continue their gliding up to Instructor ratings. From there, there are few limits to what you can acheive!
